Under the astute leadership of William Powell the business became one of the largest sauce manufacturers in the world. There were around 500 employees at the firm by 1900.

However, once you taste them you’ll notice that Worcestershire is savory or “umami” whereas Yorkshire relish has a spicy tomato flavor! Yorkshire relish fans, however, argue that the condiment has a unique flavor that can’t really be replaced by Worcestershire sauce.While Worcestershire sauce is fermented, Yorkshire relish is traditionally made through a slow-cooking and reduced process.

Worcestershire sauce can be used as an ingredient for salad dressings, marinades and soups. It’s also a great addition to meatloaf, burgers, steak and other grilled items. H B Hawley was a keen bandmaster and composer, and he formed the Hammonds Sauce Works Band in 1946.Ultimately, the choice between the two sauces is up to personal preference. Both are excellent in their own way. H B Hawley founded a sauce manufacturing company, at Wellcroft Mills, Shipley, in 1924. Initially there were four employees. Worcestershire sauce like the original Lea & Perrins contains anchovies so it is not vegan-friendly.
