I thought it was stunning, although perhaps it was the combo of 3D/48fps that was interesting to me... just because it was "different". I saw the film both in standard 2D, and then again 3D/48fps, and i much preferred the 3D viewing. I'm not a huge 3D fan though, probably only seen about 10 films in 3D, so I would admit that some of my impressions of the HFR may have been clouded by me being a bit of a 3D newb. It's a shame they didn't have a 2D/48fps version for me to see.

The Hobbit films reach some of the highest levels of sharpness, clarity and luminance I’ve ever seen rendered on a 4k TV. If you’ve seen the imagery of the Dwarven mines that introduce ‘An Unexpected Journey’ you’ll know what I mean. Their beards glisten, their eyes sparkle, and mining work lights glow like gold on the walls behind them (see the film still). Comparing the DV and HDR10 presentations for each of film in this trilogy, I found the HDR renderings to be similar. Each title looked solid on both formats with respect to the reproduction of HDR. I felt that the each handled of the finest details in shadows, delineation in specular highlights and, gradations in variants of color equally. You can’t go wrong with either. Note: Warner Bros will release an ultimate Middle Earth six-film collectors edition in the summer of 2021. The photography made a major difference to the presentation. From the opening scenes at The Shire, the beautiful landscapes are razor-sharp, the green The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, and The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies

Is the image and sound really improved over the previous Blu-ray release? The answer to that is: HELL, yes. From an image and sound standpoint, these films are presented in reference quality. Since this film was actually shot in 5K, it really does make the most of the Ultra HD format’s capabilities. However, if you don’t already have them, you’ll need to get a 4K display, a 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray player, and a surround sound system that’s compatible with Dolby Atmos to take full advantage. Audio on the 4K disc is included in English Dolby Atmos, essentially the same mix heard in theaters. And like the Atmos for An Unexpected Journey, this is a reference quality surround sound experience, with a fully hemispheric sonic environment. The soundstage is grand, with wonderful activity in the height channels throughout the film—and especially as Smaug stalks the halls of Erebor during the film’s climax. The dialogue is clean, clear, and full sounding, while music and effects offer lovely fidelity. Channel to channel movement is natural and lively, particularly appreciated in moments like the barrel chase from Thranduil’s Silvan Elves in Mirkwood. And the dynamics are tremendous, with muscular bass. This mix dazzles in moments of bluster and calm alike; just listen as Bilbo and Smaug scamper over the piles of gold and jewels in Erebor, with the metallic slush of treasure sliding and shifting all around. The only additional audio option on the 4K EXTENDED EDITION disc is French 7.1 DTS-HD Master Audio, while the optional subtitles include English for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, French, Dutch, and Spanish. (Note that these options are different than those for An Unexpected Journey above.) Additional audio options on the 4K THEATRICAL CUT disc include French 7.1 DTS-HD Master Audio and Spanish 5.1 Dolby Digital, with optional subtitles in English for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, French, Dutch, and Spanish. The audio design is similar to previous releases of the film but features some breathtaking expansiveness that is the direct result of In addition, there will be further releases during 2021 including a 4K UHD “Middle-earth” Ultimate Collectors’ Edition featuring the theatrical and extended versions of all six films, along with new bonus content, previously released Blu-ray discs of The Hobbit Trilogy and remastered Blu-ray discs of The Lord of the Rings Trilogy. This is scheduled for release in the summer of 2021.

The Hobbit 4K Review: Finally the Trilogy Looks Like Real Movies

Never again will I watch a movie in HFR after having seen Five Armies in 3D 48fps at the cinema. Worst movie experience ever for me. If people would like such a thing (for home use) then that's fine but not me. I'd like to keep the movie magic instead of having the feeling I'm watching a behind the scenes special.LG OLED 77C8 (calibrated by Chad B)...Denon X4300H 9.2 AVR...Panasonic DP-UB820...LG UHD UBK90...Toshiba HD-A30...Dish Hopper 3...Roku Premiere +...Harmony One Titles are often re-mastered and re-released so if you find a one that requires updating, please help out and drop us a line so we can maintain our 4K list as accurately as possible for everyone. One of the best audio moments The Hobbit Trilogy is in Golem’s cave where the sounds of dripping water surround you with spatial effects in Dolby Atmos/TrueHD 7.1 channel surround. These spatial effects were evident while wearing headphones as well as multiple speakers — although only when the volume is turned up loud (or your home theater completely silent) can you truly experience the effects of the cave space. This extended cut of The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies includes 20 minutes of extra film footage that extends individual scenes. The sequence that contains the bulk of the additional material occur during the battle in the third act, with smaller extensions of scenes, such as those that take place during the encounter in Dol Gudur and within the Lonely Mountain. Predominantly speaking I didn't find that the additional scenes enhanced the narrative as it stood however, I really liked an added scene that showed Thorin, Kili and Fili lying in state while everyone mourned them. Following this scene is another add on showing the crowning of Thorin's replacement, Dain. For those that wondered what became of Alfrid, after Bard let him go (dressed as a woman) with his bosom full of gold, there is an added sequence where you find out. I wouldn't say that the extended edition needed to be 20 minutes longer but, a few of the additional elements proved enriching. Due to the subject matter these aren’t overtly bright films, although there are most definitely bright elements. The terrific cinematography benefits from the enhanced resolution and emboldened contrast bringing the visuals to a rewarding level where depth and dimension abound. The scene in chapter 10 of An Unexpected Journey where the group sits in the moonlight while Balin recounts Thorin’s past looks nearly three dimensional. The same is true of their trek through the dark perils of Mirkwood.
