You’re one third bad intentions, one third pure avarice, and one eighth sawdust. What’s left, I’ll credit, must be brains.”

Fantasy meets The Great Con - I’d like to say that the MCs of the story rob from the rich to give to the poor like Robin Hood. But they don’t. I’d like to say the people he is stealing from are jerks and deserve it. But they don’t. I’d like to say they are really good people and just got a bad start in life. But that isn’t entirely true either. The Thorn of Camorr is said to be an unbeatable swordsman, a master thief, a ghost that walks through walls. Half the city believes him to be a legendary champion of the poor. The other half believe him to be a foolish myth. Nobody has it quite right.I most certainly do understand, but I don't enjoy reading about what material a character's coat is made out of unless it will somehow be relevant later on in the story. Deathbed promise to his mother." Bug drove his pole down into the canal, struggled against it for a moment, and managed to shove them along once more. "She kept the Vadran religion after she married the old Don Salvara. So he leaves an offering at the Vadran temple once a week and gets home as fast as he can so nobody pays too much attention to him. Dammit, Jean, I already know this shit. Why would I be here if you didn't trust me? And why am I the one who gets to push this stupid barge all the way to the market?" Years later I finally got around to reading Lies and enjoyed it. I saw that it was a clever book, and gritty, with a cool world. And there was an orphan boy in it who was a witty, mouthy thief. A while after that, I met Scott and really liked him as well. So I let go of what little residual irritation I had, not that there was very much... World Fantasy Convention 2007 | World Fantasy Convention". World Fantasy Convention . Retrieved March 18, 2023. Overall, this is a great fantasy novel that is unlike any others I’ve read. This is always good because the genre can be littered with books that simply follow the standard fantasy archetype, which results in repetitive story telling. This isn’t necessarily bad, but can become boring after a while. Therefore, the plot of this is fresh, exciting and completely new.

You're one third bad intentions, one third pure avarice, and one eighth sawdust. What's left, I'll credit, must be brains.” There was a high-pitched scream from their right, echoing across the cobbles and walls of the Temple District. It was followed by shouts and the creaking tread of men in battle harness--but these sounds moved away from the mouth of the alley, not toward it. You’re one third bad intentions, one third pure avarice, and one eight sawdust. What’s left, I’ll credit, must be brains.” J You guys, this story is unreal. It’s so morally wrong that you don’t even want it to be right. It’s that luring, that gritty, that bold . . . its masterfully chaotic – so many subplots, so many characters, so much world-building. theres never a dull moment . . . its intricately woven– no movement, no scene, no word is insignificant. Everything is so interconnected on so many levels. I straight up got chills in some parts’ Goodreads reviewer, ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐My Patrons: Alfred, Alya, Annabeth, Devin, Diana, Hamad, Jimmy Nutts, Joie, Michelle, Mike, Miracle, Nicholas, Zoe. you guys, this story is unreal. its so morally wrong that you dont even want it to be right. its that luring, that gritty, that bold. I'll give credit when credit is due, the world building is sharp and the city feels alive. But ultimately the world is bloated with cities and places we never see, people who we never meet and have no connection to the plot, and the scenes are blurred and described in excruciating detail such that we never get to imagine even a single stray snowflake for ourselves. In any event, I found it to be a rewarding read, well written, and entertaining. I'd recommend any fantasy fan to give it a try. It stole hours of sleep. It wrapped me in cozy myth. It gave me the blessing of feeling like a kid again, snuggled up with a book, wondering how the hell 10pm became 4am. Find. Buy. Consume‘ Pierce Brown, bestselling author of the Red Rising series
