You can easily make this recipe vegetarian by skipping the pigs in blankets. How to make festive chips

If you’re not traditionally a fan of sprouts – try adding a few less into the recipe – but still, try them! They taste completely different fried with bacon and seasonings. I used to live at the top of the steps. Christmas Steps trade bellied out when "The Mall" at Cribbs Causeway opened in 1998 and John Lewis moved away, pulling the smartest money way from town. Before that many people from Redland/Clifton/Cotham walked down the steps to get to the shopping centre. There was rarely a vacant shop unit!Others suggest that the name may be derived from the nativity scene found in a stained glass window of The Chapel of the Three Kings of Cologne, which lies at the top of the steps. The Steps to Recruitment ladies are planning a fun-filled street party for the start of October, with music and stalls, and hopefully with the involvement of all the other traders from Christmas Steps.

However, the more traders I spoke to, the more apparent it became that Christmas Steps has been gradually losing the charm and atmosphere that it once enjoyed. Read more: We tried Yum on the Andersonstown Road and were pleasantly surprised by the quality and price The day is being held to raise money for Basic (the Brain And Spinal Injury Charity), which helps to provide much needed aftercare for people who suffer brain haemorrhages. Not so long ago, the street was full of quirky antique shops and book shops, which attracted tourists and browsing shoppers from all around. These festive chips contain lots of the traditional trimmings of a Christmas dinner, fried with festive seasoning and a portion of chips! They’re so delicious it was hard for me and my husband not to eat them all before I got a decent photo. Cook – stirring often – until everything begins to brown. Don’t worry that the bacon and sausage separate – this will happen in most cases But today, the street is much quieter and several buildings now lie empty or have been converted into student accommodation.

Today, however, there remains just one pub - The Three Sugar Loaves - at the base of the steps, with not a single brothel in sight. There is certainly a sense amongst the majority of those who trade here that the council has not done enough to preserve and promote this unique part of the city. One of the first ever ‘chippies’ to open in England, this shop won a Best in Britain award whilst under the management of the inimitable Grace and Robert. She also has fond memories of the street parties that have been held on Christmas Steps, including ‘4th of July’ parties and even a Christmas party in the middle of summer for underprivileged children (during which, I am told, Father Christmas abseiled down the side of the building). Decline in tourism

It is a vicious circle from which it will be hard to escape: with so few tourists being attracted to the steps, new traders are unwilling to take the chance of setting up shop here. We asked our readers where their favourite place is to get a 'Christmas chip' in Northern Ireland - and it's safe to say it will be easy for you to find one nearby! It seems a shame that one of the most historic and delightful parts of the city should be allowed to dwindle in this way. Being so close to the water, it is suspected that most of the buildings on the street at one time housed bars and brothels. We all love flavoured chips right?! Theyr’e amongst the most popular recipes I have here on the blog. I think they work so well as they’re a simple, slightly different side dish which are sooo good!
