Tip to parents: if you aren't prepared to talk to your child about jail and visiting family there, this may not suit your picture book needs.

A little boy's train journey through a bustling city reveals that we are all more alike than we are different. De la Peña’s descriptive language and Robinson’s innocent, endearing art make for another winning package . I remember sitting on the crowded carriages, just like Milo, and imagining the lives of those around me. De la Peña’s descriptive language and Robinson’s innocent, endearing art make for another winning package… A memorable, thought-provoking story poised to make a difference for many.Christian Robinson received a Caldecott Honor and a Coretta Scott King Illustrator Honor for his art in Last Stop on Market Street.

The book is fairly text heavy, but for me the real story is wordless: it is told through Milo’s drawings. This would be an excellent book to share with school-age children to spark conversations about prejudice, unconscious bias as well as thinking about universally shared experiences of family, love and hope.Christian Robinson is a 2016 Caldecott Honoree and also received a Coretta Scott King Illustrator Honor for his art in Last Stop on Market Street by Matt de la Peña (Putnam, 2015); de la Peña himself took home the 2016 Newbery Medal, awarded by the Association for Library Service to Children for the "most distinguished book for children. I also loved that the child was able to reflect on the assumption they made in their art thoughts and be open to alternative narratives because it’s important for kids to be flexible to changing their minds and knowing that sometimes we are not always right. Many books are pure entertainment, but sometimes it's important to read stories that reflect reality. It is just a celebration of children, optimism about life, changing society with imagination and positive thinking.
