As much as I enjoyed this book I felt that it ended very abruptly, you are sitting there with only a handful of pages left knowing that something bad has to happen – something bad ALWAYS happens – then in the last thirty or so pages it does. The story is framed through the lens of a young gal (not yet twenty) who is desparate to improve herself, the circles she moves in and indeed her wardrobe. Gerard Deloume, who first settled here in the late 1890s, was drawn to the "space and freedom" it offered – "a place where the Lord's voice still echoed from His Creation". A Vision of Loveliness is a novel grounded in the grubby glamour of the 1960s, but it speaks sharply to the societal, financial and aesthetic pressures of being a woman today.

While complete drivel nowadays it works to show the kind of points that Jane has grown up moulding herself around. She scanned the tables vaguely and spotted a large group of rather drunk but rather smart-looking people over in the corner.Determined to "better herself", she makes friends with Suzy, a smart girl about town who introduces her to the delights of Belgravia flats, Hardy Amis frocks, sugar daddies and self-satisfied young men. I took a chance on it after seeing a review in one of the Emerald Street newsletters from some time ago. biting social satire" says the Observer review, and "read(s) like gender history" states Barbara Trapido. Jane James knows that she was born to better things than a dingy bedroom in her Aunt Doreen's house in Norbury. I would have given it five stars but the ending felt a bit rushed which is a shame as it was a delightful read.

Jane James knows that she must have been born to better things than a dingy bedroom in her Aunt Doreen’s house in Norbury and evenings spent eating gala pie and Heinz tinned potato salad in their ‘sitting-cum-dining room’.It is a tale that is played out in a time before the true explosion of teenage tastes, styles and money to throw at fashion and fripperies; a time when glamour and style even of the young was nearer to hidebound tailoring, evening gowns and set hairdos. But where The Cuckoo Boy is a savage indictment of hypocrisy and forced social convention, Deloume Road is a more delicate meditation on the cyclical nature of history, and the strength of communities. What follows is an entertaining and dark story of girls about town living on next to nothing in borrowed flats and trying to get as many meals paid for by other people as possible – bearing in mind that they have to eat very little to maintain their svelte figures.

Aside from Deloume, most of the narrative voices belong to the road's residents, during a late summer in the 1990s. The only one to find string-free happiness is Doreen, Jane’s extraordinarily sour, slovenly aunt – 'Reen’ goes rather merrily mad, with an eye to the social niceties she used to shun and a hand 'down the front of her yellow, lacy, nylon knickers’. No access along the top of the dale beyond a corner formed by the wall and obvious new fence bounding the 3rd major gully east of Plum Buttress. Psalm 96:11-12 “Let the heavens rejoice, and let the earth be glad; let the sea roar, and the fullness thereof. Parts of Nettle Buttress, Chee Tor East, and Dogs Dinner area are bolt free areas of outstanding appearance.I’m well aware that no moment is ever exactly duplicated so one must drink it in as a once-in-a-lifetime treasure. Because of my obsession with The Hour, I've found myself really interested in reading books set in that period, 1950-60s London, and especially those with interesting female characters. Having very much enjoyed this author’s book ‘Ghastly Business’ I decided to try ‘A Vision of Loveliness’.
