I was just hugely relieved that it was finished. We lost a lot of people, a lot of people were wounded and many were disabled, that was a great tragedy for them, but they should feel proud and the Falkland Islands should feel proud that they'd all brought about this result. Nott met his future wife Miloska, a Slovene, at the University of Cambridge. Lady Nott was awarded an OBE in 2012 for her humanitarian work. [7] Their son, Julian Nott, is a film composer, screenwriter and director, most famous for writing the scores for the Wallace and Gromit and Peppa Pig animated short films. Their other son, William, works for an international oil company in London. Their daughter, Sasha, is a journalist married to the former MP for East Devon, Hugo Swire, Baron Swire, and published controversial diaries about life as a parliamentarian's wife in the early 21st century. [8] He lives on his farm at St Erth in Cornwall. The secretary of state is supported by the other ministers in the Defence Ministerial Team and the MOD permanent secretary. The corresponding shadow minister is the shadow secretary of state for defence, and the secretary of state is also scrutinised by the Defence Select Committee. [6] On his appointment as Prime Minister in May 1940, Winston Churchill created for himself the new post of Minister of Defence. The post was created in response to previous criticism that there had been no clear single minister in charge of the prosecution of World War II. In 1946, the post became the only cabinet-level post representing the military, with the three service ministers – the Secretary of State for War, the First Lord of the Admiralty, and the Secretary of State for Air, now formally subordinated to the Minister of Defence. This was a tremendous achievement and it definitely revived the self confidence of the nation. It was an amazing episode in our history.

The son of Richard Nott and Phyllis née Francis, Nott was educated at Bradfield College and was commissioned as a regular officer in the 2nd Gurkha Rifles in Malaysia (1952–1956). He left to study law and economics at Trinity College, Cambridge, where he was President of the Cambridge Union Society. At Cambridge he met his future wife Miloshka, herself a refugee from Communist Slovenia (Yugoslavia). They have two sons and a daughter.Nott was portrayed by Clive Merrison in the 2002 BBC production of Ian Curteis's controversial The Falklands Play. When I heard that he was resigning I offered my resignation too because although I had had nothing to do with the negotiations with Argentina, it was after all British territory and it had been invaded by an enemy. Swire, Sasha (15 September 2020). "Negronis at dawn and David Cameron's last days: Sasha Swire's secret diary". The Times . Retrieved 19 September 2020. Of course I knew that we had some Royal Marines there, but I had to remind myself as to where the Falkland Islands were when the scrap merchants landed on South Georgia. Aitkenhead, Decca (12 September 2020). "Sasha Swire on the Camerons, Boris and her sensational secret diaries". The Times (Interview) . Retrieved 19 September 2020.

Swire's book, Diary of an MP's Wife: Inside and Outside Power, was published on 24 September 2020. It is Swire's diary of 20 years, [2] and contains insights into the private lives of Conservative politicians, [9] including David Cameron, George Osborne, Dominic Raab, Theresa May, Michael Gove and Boris Johnson. [1] It was serialised in The Times prior to its release. [10] I’m 90 and, quite honestly, I can’t be bothered with it,” he says. “I don’t really want to go through it again.” Although he was prepared to answer one question, which we shall come to. Press Secretary Bernard Ingham, left, was by Margaret Thatcher’s side throughout her time at No 10 (Photo: Graham Wiltshire/Getty) Manpower losses for the Royal Air Force would amount to 2,500, but the white paper committed to retaining all of the RAF's projects, and confirmed the procurement of the AV-8B Harrier in collaboration with the United States. Two F-4 Phantom squadrons were to be retained for the air defence mission in the U.K. (together with two additional Phantom squadrons deployed in Germany) rather than being phased out with the introduction of the Panavia Tornado ADV, while the number of refitted Nimrod Mk II maritime patrol aircraft would be increased by three to 34. [4] And there are doubts that Britain would now be in a position to repel another Falklands invasion by Argentina.Asked what the mood in Cabinet was as the news of victory came through, Lord Tebbit makes reference to more recent celebrations in Downing Street The post was created in 1964 as successor to the posts of Minister for Coordination of Defence and Minister of Defence. It replaced the positions of First Lord of the Admiralty, Secretary of State for War and Secretary of State for Air, as the Admiralty, War Office and Air Ministry were merged into the Ministry of Defence (the Secretary of State for War had already ceased to be a cabinet position in 1946, with the creation of the cabinet-level Minister of Defence).

She sought selection for the Teignbridge parliamentary candidacy of 2005 won by Stanley Johnson. [8] David Cameron wanted her to stand for a parliamentary seat for the Conservative Party again in 2009. [5] It was understandable that Argentina believed Britain had lost interest in the South Atlantic, and not surprising that Galtieri felt he could take and retain with ease what the Argentinian people continue to call Islas Malvinas. Michael Heseltine, left, leaves 10 Downing Street in 1982 after a Cabinet meeting about the Falklands (Photo: Julian Brown/Daily Mirror/Mirrorpix/Getty) For Sir Bernard it is the failure to learn from previous wars, which he believes continues to this day. I remember very clearly a key moment when Admiral [Terence] Lewin, who was chief of defence staff, advised the Cabinet on the outcome. This review proposed extensive cuts to the Royal Navy's surface fleet, including the sale of the new aircraft carrier Invincible to Australia thereby reducing the carrier fleet to just two vessels. Under the review, the Royal Navy was focused primarily on anti-submarine warfare under the auspices of NATO. Any out-of-area amphibious operations were considered unlikely. The entire Royal Marine amphibious force was in jeopardy of being disbanded and the review announced an intent to phase out both assault ships, Intrepid and Fearless, by 1984. [1] [2]
