The number before the needle type indicates the number of needle tips soldered together at the end. One of the most popular needles used for outlines is the Round Liner or RL needle. An RL needle is made up of a circular grouping of smaller needles. While many artists use the 3RL, 4RL, 5RL, 7RL, or even 9RL, the 1RL (consisting of a single needle tip) is mostly reserved for single needle tattoos. This is because it allows artists to create some of the most intricate pieces out there. The 1RL Needle Explained Before getting into the article that broaches the subject of needle technique, read our article about tattooing hands and feet, it has a load of info about the skin and what to expect when tattooing those areas. RS needles feature needle points, typically 3, 5, 7, or 9 points, arranged in a circular form that allows you to drop a significant amount of ink in one go, but not as much as with a magnum. Single needle tattoos are beautiful, small, intricate pieces, but they come with their own unique set of challenges. With this style, there is no room for any mistakes. Just one dot out of place and you could completely ruin your design. Unlike other styles, 1RL single needle tattoos are extremely unforgiving because you can’t correct any mistakes, making precision an essential skill.

In addition to the standard needle configurations, you can also find products that bear extra qualifiers like “super tight” and “extra super tight.” These denotations help identify modified configurations that often offer tattooists a more precise experience than most regular offerings. Magnum Shader Needles (denoted as M1 or MS) In the beginning, we overly focus on what some of us experienced tattoo artists think of as the mundane. Running lines, whip shading, light source… It something that we may take for granted as practice leads to understanding. That understanding leads to mastery, in most cases. This leads me to a question: If we are working towards a mastery with knowledge that is incorrect, can we ever obtain mastery?Flat needles are marked FL (Flat Liner) or, less often, FS (Flat Shader) for short. Just like round needles, these are written out with the number of pins in front, like 7FL or 5FS. Needle skip when running lines with small groupings can be disastrous when working a highly detailed piece. Although I had started my career using mostly larger grouping liners, I only use 3 round and 5 round liners for the vast majority of my work currently. Tattoo artists change use fresh needles before starting a tattoo, but how often are they supposed to change that same needle when working on your skin? This question causes conflict between artists. It also creates mixed messages from tattoo supply shops. So, what is the answer? Let’s move on and take a look at needle technique using liner groupings. There are various types of needles available to use, all of which are suitable for different techniques, styles, and effects. Aside from the larger pieces, you also get a standard selection of regular-sized liners and shaders as well as massive 7M1 and 9M1 magnum pieces. The tool-free setup of these needles will help streamline your workflow, as you can easily swap your needles while tattooing. Funny enough, some of those things that we used to be driven crazy by, when our mentors or just by ourselves we’re trying out new things, have become something that we rarely focus on what we’re doing tattoos as we mature towards mastery. How often do you pay attention to where your needles are? Do you only pay attention to what feels right ? How Often Should You Change Your Tattoo Needle?
