While Prohibition presented a problem for most Americans in 1920, the ban on the sale of alcohol became an opportunity for the owners of London wine and spirit merchant Berry Bros. & Rudd. Thirty-One Whiskey is a blog devoted to the appreciation of good whiskey, fine cigars, and the value of a hard day’s work in the wood shop. There’s not a whole lot of information about the source of this whisky, which is common for blended scotch such as this.

Cutty Sark Blended Scotch Whisky : The Whisky Exchange

While the merchant has been trading at No.3 St. James’s Street since 1698, it first moved into whisky in 1915 with a blend named St. James’s referenced in its export price list for that year. Over the years a number of blended whiskies from the company emerged, all of which were pale in colour to appeal to the Cognac-drinking partners who equated lightness with quality. The honey flavor is almost completely gone, and so is the lemon zest. Really, all that’s left is a bit of smoke and alcohol, which isn’t nearly as enjoyable as drinking this neat. Recalling the outstanding flavors in this spirit from the neat version just makes this take even sadder. Overall Mad Men airs for the first time on television with several appearances from Cutty Sark over its seven seasons By the time Prohibition was repealed in 1933 Cutty Sark was already a well-established brand, making exports an easy ride for Berry Bros. & Rudd – less than 30 years later in 1961 Cutty Sark became the first Scotch whisky to sell over one million cases in the US.We’re wrapping up our exploration of mid-century whiskey with a fitting end: Cutty Sark Blended Scotch. With a storied past (created by one of the most renowned wine and spirits merchants and named for one of the most famous merchant ships in history), Cutty Sark boasts a certain pedigree many blended scotches don’t. But is it all brand and no substance? We’re diving into a bottle to find out. Coming off the glass are a lot of light and fruity aromas, alongside orange and lemon zest notes with a bit of smokey peat blended in. Unfortunately, that doesn’t last very long if you leave the whiskey in the glass, and eventually all you have left is closer to just plain alcohol. Normally, the addition of ice causes the more delicate flavors to drop out of the race. In this case, unfortunately, it’s no different.

Whisky Review: Cutty Sark Blended Scotch Whisky Whisky Review: Cutty Sark Blended Scotch Whisky

The name Cutty Sark was suggested by James McBey, a renowned artist who the Berry brothers had invited to lunch. Cutty Sark was named for the famed 19th century tea clipper, the fastest ship of its time and the name actually derives from the Gaelic for ‘short shirt’. The blend is an amalgam of around twenty single malt whiskies, most of which are from Speyside. The Cutty Sark ship, after which the whisky is named, is towed into her final resting place in GreenwichThe first thing you’ll notice is that the whiskey is remarkably light in color, like a bale of freshly cut hay. It’s even lighter than other common blended scotch whiskies, which are usually light themselves. Cutty Sark was established on the 20th March 1923 with help from the famed wine merchants Berry Bros & Rudd. Whisky was becoming increasingly popular and the release of premium blended whisky was deemed to be a gainful proposition. The blend was created with only the best whiskies available, such were the wishes of Francis Berry, a senior partner who also insisted the whisky’s hue be of a light persuasion. Berry Bros. & Rudd remains internationally renowned as wine merchants, but no longer own the Cutty Sark brand. The brand was sold to the Scottish-based Edrington Group in 2010, who were themselves acquired by the French distilled spirits company La Martiniquaise-Bardinet in 2018. Product
