Our school celebrated its 50th anniversary last year and, as you would expect, there was a cake, a party, music, a mayor and plenty of former students and parents. Amid all of the celebrations, we reflected on the evolution of the school and of society in that period of time with the help of lots of photos and some historical documents. For instance, I learned that we started life as an ESN school; ESN standing for Educationally Subnormal. They admired how multicultural the school had become - a far cry from their time when James said he could recall only one non-British student. Before leaving the school on the 22nd I had a conference with some of the Managers and saw the girls at work and am of the opinion that the trouble has practically ceased. The Managers throughout had been helpful and grateful for my assistance and I think on the whole the Superintendent has acted sensibly and has been supported by her staff. I believe that the whole trouble was a conspiracy on the part of the girls to get rid of the new Superintendent, having realised that the absolute want of discipline and lazy habits allowed by the late Superintendent

On 11.6.23 Miss Langley rang me up [...] I asked [...] about my letter and she said that she and the managers had considered it, but feared they must continue to use corporal punishment on the seat when occasion arose, because it was what the girls had been told they would get [...] Our Consumer Protection Division is still looking into the issue,” Gonder responds. “The school cooperated in providing information, but their information was different from hers.” We have laws to protect people from illegal incarceration,” says an alum of one tough-love home for teens. “But apparently not if you’re a teenage girl.” She said that [...] the bigger girls [...] felt that though they had behaved well themselves they were not trusted and would get the tawse on the seat for the slightest thing. [...]

The edict doesn't say what "mild" or "sharp" welcomes mean, but I found this in an academic book about the history of prisons in Bremen:

Johnson is the mother of three girls. One is in college and two are in high school in another district. During their elementary school years in Covington County, though, Johnson had to consider whether she wanted to allow them to be paddled by their teachers — as she was as a child. Every year, she decided the answer was yes. In 1909, the Head Prefect Robert Boyd (OC 867) explained to the new prefects their duties which included to ‘ensure promptness of boys at meals’, ‘to enforce by example and precept good behaviour at meals’ and make sure ‘boys must get permission before leaving studies during prep time’. 1 This deference to parental preference is a common response from officials at schools that use corporal punishment. Ellen Reddy, CEO of the Nollie Jenkins Family Center in Holmes County, Mississippi, is among those who reject the logic. She argues, in line with the international human rights position, that children are citizens, too, and deserve to be treated with dignity and respect.

Sometimes, the ruler of the land may commute this penalty into imprisonment. This may apply to both elements, or only to the banishment after the completed Staupenschlag"
