For people at a lower level of the game conventional swing can be a confusing thing, and even once it is understood, it’s still incredibly hard to control! With this post I hope I can dispel some myths about swing bowling, and teach you the basics that are required to be able to move the ball in the air effectively. Remove any sweat from your throwing hand before you grip the ball. A good grip is key to delivering a successful offspin bowl. To ensure that your fingers are able to hold the ball correctly, wipe your hands to remove any sweat and dirt that could cause the ball to slip from your grip. Psychological research on the persistence of misinformation suggests that false beliefs are difficult to correct without a plausible causal account to replace the erroneous one. There is little if anything written or discussed in this regard in the media that could capture the imagination of those currently in thrall to the accepted narrative. In reality, there are several hypotheses that appear eminently plausible and that could be advanced as alternative explanations.

3 Ways to Add Swing to a Cricket Ball - wikiHow

Explaining the same through fundamentals of fluid mechanics, Rabindra Mehta writes “ As the ball is flying through the air, a thin layer of air called the ‘boundary layer’ forms along the ball’s surface. The boundary layer cannot stay attached to the ball’s surface all the way around the ball and it tends to leave or ‘separate’ from the surface at some point. The location of this separation point determines the pressure and a relatively late separation results in lower pressure on that side. A side force or swing will only be generated if there is a pressure difference between the two sides of the ball”. Explaining the same, Rabindra Mehta wrote that if a bowler is bowling at a speed of more than 110 km/h or 31.2 m/s, say at 35m/s, then it’ll cause the asymmetry to reduce along with the swing. So to put it briefly, there will be no swing! As swing bowling is heavily dependent on the condition of the ball, many ball tampering controversies have been related to it, where teams have tried to illegally alter the wear of the ball using materials such as sandpaper to produce additional swing. Try setting up a simple stake in the ground, made from a branch, to show you where the batsman would be. After the ball has been shined on one side by the fielders, it may look something like this Your Bowling ActionHold the ball so that the seam runs horizontally. The standard way to hold the ball when you bowl is to line up the seam so that it runs vertically in your hand. To bowl offspin, you need to grip the ball so that the seam runs horizontally to help line up your fingers. [2] X Research source Always hold the ball with your fingertips on the seam. Do not place your palms on the side of the ball as this can add unwanted moisture.

Your top two fingers should rest close together on the top of the ball with your middle finger directly on the seam. Your thumb should rest on the bottom of the ball at the seam. For Jimmy’s outswinger, he will hold the ball in the outswing grip, run up and go through his delivery stride as normal. However, when the ball is about to leave the hand, he will ensure the last finger that touches the ball is his index finger. With the last bit of momentum being applied to the ball by this finger, this causes the seam to rotate in the direction of first slip, making it more likely to swing away from the batsman. Inswing Outswinger: An outswinger to a right-handed batsman can be bowled by aligning the seam slightly to the left towards the slips and placing the roughened side of the ball on the left. To extract consistent swing, a bowler can also rotate his wrist toward the slips while keeping his arm straight. To a right-handed batsman, this results in the ball moving away to the off side while in flight, usually outwards from his body. Malcolm Marshall, Richard Hadlee, Dominic Cork, Courtney Walsh and Dale Steyn have been great exponents of the outswingers. Many coaches believe that the bowlers’ action is one of the most important aspects of being able to bowl conventional swing. Many of them also believe that having either a ‘side-on’ or a ‘front-on’ action will mean that you are more likely to swing the ball one way rather than the other. This may be true, however it does not mean that you can’t learn to swing the ball the other way too. The basic principle for the two is same: Players of one team have to attempt to score runs by hitting the ball; at the same time players of the other team have to attempt to prevent the scoring and to put batting players out. Position the ball with the seam straight up and down. [2] X Research source As a front-on bowler, the seam should be entirely vertical. One day International (7 hours), T20 (3 hours) and Test matches (5 days with a daily 7 hours of play). Former Pakistan international Sarfraz Nawaz was the founder of reverse swing during the late 1970s, and he passed his knowledge on to former team-mate Imran Khan.
