I think if Roberts stops limiting herself to copying things that have been done, and pushes herself to develop something new and something that is truly hers, she can do well. It was simple enough to understand the history behind the Elites and the Ordinaries, but I couldn't wrap my head around the purpose of the Purging Trials.

The Powerless Trilogy by Lauren Roberts - Goodreads

Take whatever recently published fantasy book dubbed as a ‘TikTok book’, and you will find the same 2D, boring, plain characters. That said, I also don’t want to not speak my mind since Goodreads is one of the few places I can be completely honest. After surviving the Purging Trials, Ordinary-born Paedyn Gray has killed the King and kickstarted a Resistance throughout the land. However, it’s the kind of fantasy book where you could guess every single thing that’s going to happen in a typical YA fantasy book. also finally a strong mc who isn't annoying half the time and making stupid decisions just for the plot.

If the Trials and the opponents within them don’t kill her, the prince she’s fighting feelings for certainly will if he discovers what she is—completely Ordinary. Maas, this young adult fantasy follows the forbidden romance between a powerful prince and an ordinary girl as they try to survive their kingdom’s grueling laws pitting them against each other. But in a city without Elites, the balance between the hunter and hunted shifts—and the battle between duty and desire is deadly. Paedyn and Kai’s alternating POVs skillfully juxtapose steamy romantic encounters with heart-pounding action and gory violence, delivering a tale of political and personal intrigue that capably kicks off an epic trilogy. There was potential with her maid Ellie and imperial bodyguard Lenny but both never really went anywhere.

I've written this review with the expectation that you will read it, so feel free, because I've thought long and hard about how I'm gonna approach this. And then when his interrogation is unsuccessful, Kai gets frustrated and we cut to black to torture. That is a joke but also people have started reaching out to me to do beta reads for them since I've started reviewing on GRs and I should start charging but I'm too nice). Killing is no longer a measure of morality since murder has been recently romanticized by fantasy books, so, in what way is Kai a monster? The book follows Paedyn Gray, an Ordinary, into the Trials of Ilya where she will either succeed or die.

This review is getting long but I have so many issues with the reform revolutionaries in the selection and the violent vs nonviolent thing going on there). Every time she saw him she was reminded of the man who killed her father, and slowly had to begin to see him as a real person and appreciate him for who he was. But it's a hard skill to develop, especially if you're not aware of it, so it's an editor's job, or your beta readers, to point out those confusing sentences. but that's like a shitty editor problem and overall did not affect the quality and my enjoyment of the story this time, which is why i rated it so high still.

And because the narrative's priority was to lead to that trope, rather than story, the rest feels lackluster. if men said the things in real life that kai says to paedyn, we would have no need for romance books. But in this Trials, she faces people that have been training for years for these games… sound familiar?I loved Paedyn as our fmc- she was so fierce and badass, and i loved how she had all the odds stacked against her and still managed to survive 👑👑 She's had a really hard past and i really felt for her.

I will say, the little thingy thing between Paedyn and Kai's brother Kitt was giving enemies to lovers more than the actual marketed enemies to lovers. If the Trials and the opponents don’t kill her, the prince she’s fighting feelings for will if he discovers what Paedyn really is .

The book keeps on insisting that Kai is the mightiest killer/fighter/Elite to ever exist, but then it gives nothing to back those words. If the Trials and the opponents within them don't kill her, the prince she's fighting feelings for will if he discovers what Paedyn is. This book was veryyy unoriginal 😬 I've heard it was inspired by Red Queen and the Hunger Games and this felt a little TOO similar to those. When Paeydn unsuspectingly saves one of Ilyas princes, she finds herself thrown into the Purging Trials.
