Description

Turning your nipple shield inside out before applying helps draw your nipple into the cone-shaped area of the shield better. To determine your nipple shield size, grab a ruler or measuring tape and measure the diameter of your nipple at the base, but be sure to not include the areola and measure in millimeters. If you find yourself confused, just remember that 1 centimeter is equivalent to 10 millimeters. Painful damaged nipples: When women develop what Dr. Madden calls "excoriated" nipples, nipple shields can help reduce further tissue damage. However, Dr. Madden says, the friction of the shields' silicone can also cause soreness. "This friction is usually worse if a nipple shield is too small, so it’s important to use the right size of shield in the setting of nipple soreness and breakdown," Dr. Madden says.

If your baby was born premature, unwell or small a nipple shield can help make feeding easier for a small or weak baby because suction inside the nipple shield holds the nipple in an everted position, which makes it easier for the baby to latch on. 3. Flat or Inverted Nipples No one shape, texture, or rigidity works best for every baby. It can take some trial & error to find a shield that works well. (Again, something we excel in!)

A lot of lactation professionals will avoid using a nipple shield unless it’s necessary. Some of the disadvantages of using a nipple shield are: standards which are applied to normal soothers namely EN 1400 and 16 CFR 1511. The product poses a choking hazard. Therefore, MAM Preemies must only be used under medical supervision.

Unwanted electrical equipment is the UKs fastest growing type of waste. Many electrical items can be repaired or recycled, saving natural resources and the environment. If you do not recycle, electrical equipment will end up in landfill where hazardous substances will leak out and cause soil and water contamination – harming wildlife and also human health. In the U.K., the standard sizes are 16mm (small), 20mm (medium) and 24mm (large). A larger 28mm size is available online but can be difficult to find.

Nipple shields are recommended for some people, but not recommended for everyone. They should be used under the guidance of a lactation professional and only after weighing the pros and cons. Where can I get a nipple shield? It’s a good idea to keep an especially close eye on baby’s bowel movements and urine output while you’re using a nipple shield, as these give an indication of milk intake. Baby should have about three tablespoon-sized yellow, grainy stools in 24 hours (after the fifth day) and have at least six wet nappies. Place your thumbs on the base of the nipple, then flip it halfway inside out. That'll leave a small dimple at the end. Your nipple should be drawn into the nipple area of the shield as deeply as possible once it’s applied. If you’re unsure what size you need, talk to your lactation consultant. They’ll guide you on selecting the correct size and even demonstrate how to put on a nipple shield. How does a nipple shield work?

Medela offers a wider range of sizes for its nipple shield sizes, and has a good sizing guide that can help you find the right fit. Nipple shields come in several different sizes and it is important to use the one that best fits the size of your baby’s mouth. I most frequently use the MAM size 1 nipple shield for very young babies, but if the mother has large and hard ‘marble’ type nipples she might need to use the larger size.

There are some videos online that show you how to apply a shield with this ‘slightly inside out’ method. Trying different positions/techniques e.g. cross cradle hold and exaggerated attachment, lying down feeding, underarm hold.

The size of shield you use is not the same size as the pump funnel you use. Shields are a closer fit. Many shops will only sell one size and you may have to shop online to get a wider selection.
